Canterbury Bulls

The Canterbury Bulls will compete in the National Competition, representing the South Island in six games against North Island Teams during September and October.

The Halswell Hornets impressively boast seven representatives in the side, with an eighth making himself unavailable due to injury. While workhorse Jordan Kane pulled out, the Hornet-Bulls are Toi Sepuloni, Jaye Pukepuke, Garry Hape, Brad Austin, Matt Sauni, Erwin Sauni and Will Tafua. Former Hornet Premiers Mike Doreen and Kevin TeHau are respectively Coach and Trainer of the Canterbury Bulls for their 2013 campaign.

Update: The tough schedule had significant effects on the Canterbury Bulls in the National Premier Competition, finishing fifth. Late in the Tournament, Jason Galland also made his debut for the Canterbury Bulls! The New Zealand Residents side has yet to be named, but hope to see some Hornets in there.

Canterbury Development

The Canterbury Development side, led by the Halswell Hornets Premier coaching staff, will compete in the South Island Inter-district Competition, with 4 games around the South Island at the same time as the National Competition. Joining Darrell Coad (Coach), Darryl Hawker (Asst Coach), Craig Sullivan (Manager) and Tyler Sullivan (Trainer), are Hornets Manu Weepu, Ben Penitito, Jason Galland, Daniel Ball, Brendan Tusa and  Rob Nepia.

Update: The Canterbury Development side won the South Island Inter-District Competition, rounding off a great year for Hornets players and coaching staff.

New Zealand Maori

Jaye Pukepuke, after organising the Canterbury Maori (BroXIII) side to travel up to the National Maori Rugby League Competition, was named in the New Zealand Maori Side who had two wins against a Queensland Maori Side. At that National Maori Tournament, our Premier Reserves Manager Barb Fletcher, was named the New Zealand Maori Tournament Manager.

17s

Canterbury 17s

The Canterbury 17s were convincing winners at the South Island Inter-District 17s Competition held in Greymouth at the end of July. It was from this competition that the majority of the South Island Scorpions squad was selected. The Hornets were well represented in the side, with Corey Austin, Jak Fraser-Marshall, Tavita Fui, Ken Tofilau and Jordan Pinnock making fantastic appearances in the Red and Black jersey.

South Island Scorpions 17s

With the resurrection of the Bulls, the 17s are the only South Island Scorpions side travelling weekly in the National Competition. Like the Premier Bulls, they will take on the six North Island sides on behalf of the whole South Island. Again, the Hornets fielded seven representatives in the side with Corey Austin, Tavita Fui, Tana Fui, Makoare Matehe, Jak Fraser-Marshall, Jordan Pinnock and Ken Tofilau being named. Hornets Shane Cornelius and Nick Phillips were also named Coach and Trainer of the side.

Update: The South Island Scorpions 17s finished up 7th in the Tournament, however there were plenty of promising signs in a very young side! Although winless, the team turned out a number of representative players. Ken Tofilau and Jordan Pinnock were named in the New Zealand 17s Merit Side after the National Tournament. Corey Austin, Jak Fraser-Marshall and Jordan Pinnock made the New Zealand Residents 16s coached by Jeff Whittaker, who played two games against the Queensland 16s. While Ken Tofilau was named in the Tom Ball coached New Zealand Residents 18s, who had a win and loss against the Australian Schoolboys side.

Canterbury 15s

The Canterbury 15s also had a series of big wins as they took out the South Island Inter-District 15s Competition held in Greymouth at the end of July. The Hornets in that side were Josh Aileone, Jodi Bond, Devon Harding, Kairau Keremata-Sterling, Ethan Stodart and Philadelphia Toomalatai. While Hornets also appeared in the coaching staff ranks, as Michelle Harding took control as manager, while Premier Prop Jaye Pukepuke was the team trainer for the tournament.

South Island Scorpions 15s

The South Island Scorpion 15s do not travel around the country with the Premier Bulls and Scorpions 17s on a weekly basis like they have in the past. Instead they will be involved in a week-long tournament from September 30 – October 4 at Bruce Pulman Park, Papakura. Five Hornets made the cut for the preliminary 22 man squad, with Kairau Keremeta being named a stand-by player in the squad. Josh Aileone, Devon Harding, Philadelphia To’omalatai, Jodi Bond and Ethan Stodart are our Hornets in that side. Michelle Harding has also been called upon to reprise her Canterbury 15s role, being named as Manager for the 15s Scorpions also.

Update: The South Island Scorpions 15s finished up 7th in the Tournament, however it was a great experience and they pushed the top teams all of the way!

14s

Canterbury 14s

Although they have been playing in the 15s grade this year, four of our Hornets have been named to trial for the Canterbury 14s side. That side will travel to Wellington for the “Futures Tournament” held in Wellington at the beginning of October. We wish Tahemaka Nui, Jaxon Paul, Joseph Taipari and Klayton Waikato all the best for the trials. Joe Taipari will also be a hard task-master as the boys’ manager should they make the Canterbury side.

Update: After coming second in the 14s Futures Tournament in Wellington, which all four of the boys participated in, Joseph, Tahemaka and Klayton all made the 14s Futures Tournament Selection Team.
